The Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the “Babeş-Bolyai” University in Cluj-Napoca, in partnership with the Institute for Peace Studies in Eastern Christianity (IPSEC), is pleased to announce an international summer school on the topic “Orthodox Christianity and Contemporary Global Challenges.”
The purpose of the program is to investigate how Orthodox Christianity has managed its encounter with collective violence and fundamentalism in a geopolitical sphere that is situated at the intersection of former empires, of various political ideologies and religions. It has long been recognized that Romania is a unique place of religious, political and diplomatic collision, where the Ottoman Muslims, the Russian Orthodox, and the Austro-Hungarian Catholic and Protestant leaders have learned how to negotiate their differences and interests, territorial influence and control, as well as faith limitations. In this context, the program will offer an introduction in the field of religious studies from a Romanian perspective. On demand, the summer school can offer special courses in Byzantine Iconography and Music, as a form of healing wounded history and a way to overcome the religious differences.
Based on a study and travel model, the summer school will combine classroom training with onsite learning that involves visits of sacred places, and interviews with academics, religious leaders, political leaders and journalists.
The program includes also visits of iconic places, such as Voroneţ Monastery, the Romanian Parliament, city of Sibiu (the 2007 Cultural Capital of Europe), and much more.
We welcome undergraduate and graduate students, as well as anyone interested in learning more about Orthodox Christianity and its challenges in Eastern Europe and in the contemporary global context more generally. Academic credit is available via “Babeş-Bolyai” University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Further information will be available from 20th of November 2016
